The Animal Rescue Site is hosting a special challenge for eligible Petfinder.com member shelter and rescue groups. The grand prize is a $10,000 grant, and they will be awarding many other grants to rescue groups with the most votes — a total of $100,000 in grants for animal welfare organizations.

Think how many animals we could help for $10,000!

Help us win! All you have to do is click to help rescued animals, and then vote in The Animal Rescue Site $100,000 Shelter+ Challenge. Both of these actions are absolutely free! You can vote once a day, every day, from January 18th through April 18th, 2010. Every time you vote, or tell a friend to vote, you are making a huge difference for us.

Sandi december

Update: 2/07/10-Sandi had the final pin removed from her hip and continues on her final leg of recovery. The doctor said the mobility that Sandi has 6 months from now is what she can be expected to have forever. Sandi is doing wonderful with her therapy exercises and with her dedicated foster family's continued help. Sandi will soon be ready for her lifelong home.

Update: 12/20/09 - Sandi is doing so much better.  Her foster mom says you can see the muscle coming back in her hind legs.  She still needs to put on weight but that should come in time. Sandi has to go back to Des Moines for another check up soon. THANK YOU to IVS for their continued care and support!

Update: 11/16/09 - Sandi is now in a foster home being lovingly cared for during her recuperation. She is settling in and trying to adjust to her new environment. Her foster family is working very hard to keep her comfortable and happy. She will continue rehabilitation through therapy and lots of TLC.

UPDATE: 11/4/09 - We arrived at IVS and the staff greeted us and placed us in a room for consultation with Dr Reimer. Dr R had been watching Jan and I walk Sandi out in front of the office. He could tell she was doning much better and putting some weight on her right leg. The left leg is not quite there yet but should come along with time. He checked her reflexes and that has improved some. He removed the staples. He said he felt she should have a full recovery but it will take some time.

UPDATE: 10/30/09 - Sandi will be going to Iowa Vet Specialties on November 4th. Dr Steen at Frey Pet Hospital feels Sandi is coming along just fine considering the existent of her injuries. She is a hit at Frey's and they really enjoy her a lot. Dr. Steen says that Sandi is doing as well as he expected at this time. She is responding well and has good nerves in her back end area. She is able to feel them touch her feet and can wag her tail.

Sandi is the sweetest two year old German Shepherd you could meet. Unfortunately she was hit by a car on highway 30 near Mt. Vernon on Friday, Oct. 16th and although that person did not stop, thankfully 2 others did. Sandi was taken to Frey Pet Hospital for x-rays and then transferred to the Eastern Iowa Veterinary Specialty Center for stabilization and further care. She was well cared for until Monday, Oct. 19th when she made the trip to Des Moines for surgery. Her doctors at Iowa Veterinary Specialists needed to repair a fractured right femur, fractured left hip, and a pneumothorax. Thanks to all of the wonderful people who were entrusted with her care, she is now on her recovery journey! However, the cost of her surgeries and care are extensive and currently more than $3500. She still has follow up visits and boarding costs so we anticipate her bills to be around $4000 when she is fully recovered. If you are able to donate to her care, please send your donation to Little Paws at PO Box 14, Mt. Vernon, IA. 52314 and put Sandi in the memo line. You can also donate online through paypal! The email needed for Paypal is littlepawsdogrescue@msn.com

We are a state licensed, 501(c)(3) non-profit rescue group consisting of foster homes that take in strays, owner surrenders, and dogs from other shelters. We are a no-kill rescue. All of our dogs are in a home environment and not a kenneled facility. This enables us to be able to assess each animal individually and place it in a lifelong home best suited for the dog.Our adoption process allows us to help you find a dog that is the best match for you and your family.
